more than stories...

(Genesis 24:12 -26)

In the book of Genesis, people moved around at God’s command. Abram grew up in a city rich with culture and commerce, Ur (sorta like an ancient Manhattan). He spent time in Haran, where he did well financially (12:5). But when God said, “Go,” Abram didn’t say “No.”

One relocation account always gets to me. It’s a love story- the meeting of Isaac and Rebekah (Genesis 24). Isaac’s dad sent a servant back to his homeland to find someone who worshiped the one true God.

Through a series of events that could be considered coincidences (if we didn’t know that God was in control), the servant found Rebekah (v.12-26). The choice was hers: to stay in her comfortable home with a family who loved her, or leave to marry a man she had never met. Her answer? “I will go” (v. 58)

For Isaac, it was love at first sight. He was out in a field alone one evening, perhaps recalling memories of his mother who had recently died, when he saw Rebekah approaching. He went out to meet her, and the rest is history. Take the following key points of their story to heart:

- Isaac wasn’t frantically looking for a bride (24:63)

Seek God’s will before seeking someone to marry.

- Rebekah didn’t try to win Isaac by showing a lot of skin.

Keep your dress modest – don’t attract the opposite sex by dressing immodestly (v. 65)

- Don’t settle for just anyone who shows an interest in you (24:3-4)

Make sure both of you are growing believers.

The Bible is full of good and bad examples of what happens when real people make choices. Their stories might be more like yours than you realize.
